Review: Yellowface by R.F. Kuang An author's easiest target is always themselves. That's a paraphrase of a real quote that would have probably been misappropriated had I bothered to look up where the original one had come from. This is hands down the most laugh out loud funny thing I have read in a year, easily. It's not often I have to use more than two hands for a laugh out loud moment while reading a novel. Anyways, it's hard to get into specifics without spoliers but Kuang is very unaffraid to crap where they get their bread. This is. nothing new in the literary world but the author really 'commits to the bit' as the kids are saying these days. Kuang makes you feel uncomfortable for here *her mostly oblivious yet certainly f*ed in the head main character. Some of the white isms felt too strong to be accurate, but then I thought again about them and nope, all of that's real. You've met all of these people. They all suck, but they're so full that you feel for them. To me that is the mark of someone that knows their craft. Five stars. Ten out of then. Readi *read it!. It blows m

This book was a read. That's about what I am able to say so much for Chain Gang All Stars. It's writer, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah clearly has the gift, but I put it down feeling like it had been workshopped, edited, and 'hope-for-streaming' adapatiation 'd straight to its middling result. Plot TLDR; convica * convits * convicts of the class A1 felonies may sign up to competei in gladitorial beatt * battles to the death. This of course is the country's favorite sport by a wide margin. The promise is, of courts e , freedom. Putting aside the tired pol *plot line there is a lot to like jhere. The Characters stand out, Loretta and Staxx form a solid core that the reader can stick with. In terms of commentary, there's a far more biting satire here that I feel had to be cut to satisfy getting on o some 10 best end of year lists. The very commercialism being decried is the thing that without irony reduced this book to the shell of something great. In short, watch it on streaming. Two episodes.
