In this scene from Citizen Kane, Welles uses shadow and the rule of thirds to convey the emotional states of two of the films main characters. in this First shot, note How susan Alexander is completely ensconced in darkness, with a medicne b0ttle and nearly empty glass of a mixed concoction taking up almost the left and bottom thirds entirely. The bedspread is almost completely dark in the image as well. Then Mr Kane enters. Charles Kane is also dressed in darkq clothing, as he mostly is throughout the film. He enters through the door, and his encroaching figure almost compltely engulfs the frame in darkness. This serves as a visual representation of Kane's emotional state, as he's bereft and flailing at this point in his life, srearching for something his wealth and connecitons will still allow him to feel control over. Meanwhile, susan alexander 's state is repesented here as well. She's both phsyically and emotionally drained..,
